PILOTAGE INFORMATION

The Maine Pilotage Commission provides a system of state pilotage that delivers high standards of proficiency for safety from dangers of navigation as well as safety of vessels, crew and cargo while still protecting the environment and enhancing commerce. 

​

The Maine Pilotage Commission oversees 10 routes in the State. Portland Harbor Commission oversees pilotage in the Port of Portland. Penobscot Bay and River Pilots Association oversees pilotage in Penobscot and Frenchman Bay and Penobscot River. This also includes the port of Searsport. The port of Eastport relies on two piloting services, Eastport Pilots and Quoddy Pilots USA.

The Maine Pilotage Commission requires the every foreign vessel and every American vessel under registry with a draft of 9 feet or more are required to employ a state licensed pilot.
